It’s Cheaper to Eat Healthy! Junk foods cost more!
One of the common excuses I’ve gotten from clients, readers, or people in the audience of my lectures for almost 23 years is that it’s too expensive to eat healthy…this is Not True.
Change your thinking!
Eating healthy foods means eating foods that will sustain you for the next 3-4 hours of your day. With that being said you have to choose lean proteins, complex carbs (don’t avoid complex carbs), healthy fats, fruits, veggies, and drink plenty of water. These foods will satisfy your hunger for hours, give you good energy, help you stay hydrated, thinking straight/focused, help keep sugar/insulin levels more stable, and help your digestive and bowel systems to work properly.
Cheap foods like honey buns, chips, fries, white bagels, juices, white breads, pastries, candy, sodas, etc are cheap yes BUT they do not satisfy your body and mind for hours. We are lucky if we feel satisfied for 20-30 minutes when eating and drinking junk.
Healthy foods last longer in your system!
Here are some cheap yet fulfilling healthy food options that probably range from .20 cents to less than a $1:
- Slice of whole grain bread w/peanut butter
- Apple with spoonful of almond butter
- Banana and glass of low fat milk
- Whole grain bagel w/natural peanut butter
- Glass of almond milk w/strawberries
- Jasmine Rice with a chicken breast
- Whole grain pita w/Can of tuna in water
- Grilled chicken breast w/salad
- Turkey burger w/whole grain bread
- Handful of Almonds w/pear
- Low sugar yogurt w/orange
- Whole grain Kashi cereal in a small sandwich bag with unsweetened yogurt
- Turkey sandwich on whole grain bread
- Buy a case of waters and drink from them instead of buying a $1.25 soda or diet soda from vending machine
- Make your own coffee at home
……and I could go on and on or maybe I’ll make a part two to this article soon!
You can buy in bulk, shop/split with a friend or sit down a few minutes to budget for your week. A few minutes of preparation at the beginning of your week can save you tons of money and have you feeling more satisfied by eating healthy.
Here are a few examples of what many people eat as junk that they think is cheaper:
-A honeybun and soda can cost you over a dollar or two dollars.
-A bag of chips with a fruit juice can be over a dollar or two.
-A pastry with a coffee is over a dollar or more.
-A breakfast burrito at a fast food place is about a dollar then add a drink.
-A slice of pizza with a diet soda.
-Fast food $5-$7 combo meal of greasy burger w/fries or fried chicken tenders w/fries
-Sugary & fattening coffees from coffee shops for $3-$7
Get my point??
Plan ahead, don’t be lazy, stop making excuses, and take care of your body with cheaper, yet healthier and more fulfilling food options.
Eat healthy and your body will thank you!!
