5K in just a few weeks!
5K (actually we did 3.2 miles) accomplished yesterday only in a matter of a couple weeks for my 14 yr old! Dylan, my oldest, has been so focused on his basketball conditioning and wants to nail the mile run in November as part of tryouts for the JV team. Goal is to get faster, stronger, stay lean, injury free, and he’s trusting his old Ultramarathon/Survival Running Dad and rocking progress!
Obviously I don’t take off and leave my boy so I’m staying beside him nudging him as he gets faster. We averaged about a 9 min mile yesterday nothing too fast yet because he wanted to also increase longer endurance runs. We touch on speed (a fast mile run, speed work, low body maintenance, and explosive endurance work to enhance running) once per week right now weaving our training in/out of his conditioning with b-ball coaches. On other days we develop and maintain his upper body, core, hips, glutes, and low back strength.
Even though D has been strength training since he was 3, I never push him, I only teach him proper form, the appropriate exercises, safety, planning, etc. I’m teaching him and my 9yr old Matthew more about planning to combine Strength & Running for their sports (soccer and basketball). Dylan has been strength training for years but lately he has caught the running bug!
I’ve impressed upon Dylan the safe ways to plan strength work, combined with basketball conditioning with his coaches/other players, smart stretching, and running. It’s imperative to not get injured, plan to have the safe amount of recovery days off at the right times, resting joints/ligaments/tendons/bones/muscles to allow for growth and strength and endurance to develop properly.
For Nutrition, D has seen now more than ever the benefits of proper nutrition and when to eat what and why for optimal performance. Being aware of his size, his caloric needs, activity levels, growth spurts, and more details are important.
Really proud of my oldest boy and his growth in sports! He is maturing daily and so happy he is becoming the newest Strength Runner like his Dad’s clients and athletes locally and around the world successfully combining Strength & Running to get stronger, faster, healthier, and injury free!
